Insects are a very promising sustainable and necessary addition to the food en feed chain. They form a highly nutritious source of protein and other food components and can be produced in a very sustainable way. Edible insects are part of a serious response to the increasing worldwide food demand.
INSECTPOINT in Lelystad means to fulfill the need for applied research and development these edible insects.

The societal challenge
There is an urgent need to look for new and / or alternative sources of protein . Research by various renowned international institutions such as the FAO and the Wageningen UR shows that insects provide a sustainable and healthy alternative. The opportunities that arise from edible insects are virtually inexhaustible.

The challenges for research and development
An efficient transfer and implementation of state of the art knowledge is needed to accelerate the production and consumption of edible insects. And there is also a need for exchange of knowledge, education and training and to develop products and product chains. Transformation of scientific knowledge and ideas for innovation is needed to make steps forward in practice.
